Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter Issue #4

Pick Of 10 Jobs, COP 27 And Knowledge Gaps Identified

The Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter

Hello! I am back with another addition of the Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter. We're always looking to improve so let us know if there is anything else you would like to see!

102,500 tonnes. The amount of CO2 emitted at last year’s COP26. 36 private jets, 35,000 participants and over 100 Heads of State later, COP27 has come to a close and looks like it may rival last year's record breaking emission stats. We’ve now had a week to digest the initiatives, research and outcomes, offering a sparing thought for the four individuals who cycled from the German International University to attend the event.

Staying updated on carbontech 📰

CDR recognised as an essential part of climate action at COP27

With over 70 relevant CDR events at COP27, the vertical received significant attention, an acknowledgment of how removals can contribute to answering the climate crisis. This was further amplified by the discussions around Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, where net-negative climate commitments from developed countries were discussed, creating the foundations for industry defining action at next year's event. In terms of more tangible outcomes, the CDR Launchpad was revealed, a coalition of governments committed to driving technological developments within the space. Head over to the Carbon Removals at COP website for more info.

First Movers Coalition announces $12bn purchase commitment by 2030

The First Movers Coalition (FMC) comprises 65 companies world wide, providing monetary support to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. The coalition specifically recognises carbon dioxide removal and other verticals including cement and concrete, aluminum, steel and more. This month they announced a further commitment of $12bn to “ensure the development of key technologies” to reach a net-zero future. For CDR specifically, they have committed to contract at least 50,000 tons by 2030, with a focus on durable and scalable solutions.

British Airways pioneers air travels’ support of carbon removal

The aviation industry is responsible for just over 2% of global CO2 emissions and is considered a hard to abate sector. British Airways’ decision to include carbon removal as an option for international flights is a huge step for the aviation industry in reaching net-zero, but also for CDR tech as a proof of commercialisation. Currently BA offers passengers two carbon removal projects, Blue Carbon Mangrove in Pakistan (reforestation and revegetation) and Freres Biochar (biochar in the US). These donations will make aviation more sustainable and help to accelerate development within the removals industry.

Giving CDR projects their flowers 💐

The budding carbon removal industry is attracting many incredible, bright, and dedicated people. This is a section to highlight a project/person/achievement that deserves praise for helping humanity reach multi-gigatonne scale removals.

Reaching “climate-relevant scale” is one of the biggest issues facing the industry, with many forecasting this to be around 10Gt/yr. Reaching this figure will undoubtedly require a combination of technologies and will likely include methods we have yet to investigate at all. Making sure we explore high potential ideas to drive CDR is where Frontier’s new Carbon Removal Knowledge Gaps database comes in. A dynamic open-source project that highlights major knowledge gaps, how impactful exploration would be and who might be best positioned to do so.

So far, Frontier has narrowed down the gaps to five categories: “(1) fundamental and (2) technical questions, (3) underexplored and novel approaches, (4) MRV-related gaps, and (5) governance needs.” This allows users to easily find content that is relevant to their background, take action to fill the gaps identified and provide more info for the database itself. This is Frontier’s first attempt at creating a supply “push”, driving research and development in a specific technology in order to “push” new products into the market. If you are interested in finding out more or want to help plug the gaps, head over to the Frontier website or check out Frauke Kracke’s twitter thread.
