Carbon Removal Job Newsletter Issue #3 pick of 10 jobs, COP 27 and New $$$s for CDR startups

The Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter

The Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter

Hello! Thank you for subscribing to the Carbon Removal Jobs Newsletter. My name is Alex. I'm helping Adam to build the community around Carbon Removal Jobs. That means you will probably be hearing a lot more from me over the coming weeks... but I want to hear from you! How can CRJ work best for you?

COP 27 is here! For two weeks only, Sharm El-Sheikh transforms from holiday destination to home of the largest environmental conference. UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, decided that the previously briefed excuse of more “pressing domestic commitments” wasn’t so pressing after all. I wonder whether not-so-former rival Boris turning up and spouting his own nonsense on the world stage might have re-energised Sunak to publicly face up to this global issue. Let's hope there's more depth to it than that!

Staying updated on carbontech 📰

Initial signs of industry consolidation with large scale partnerships

LanzaTech, a carbon capture and transformation company, has partnered with Brookfield in a $500m deal to co-develop production plants that utilises LanzaTech’s CCT technology. This figure could double depending on the success of the initial partnership. Elsewhere, Nori, a carbon removal marketplace, has partnered with Bayer, one of the world’s largest agricultural companies, to increase the supply of verified carbon removal offsets available through their marketplace. These large scale collaborations are an indication of the industry consolidation we are beginning to see in the market. Reminder: carbon capture technologies reduce emissions by capturing CO2 at source; carbon removal technologies remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere to reverse climate change.

Lula wins the Brazilian presidential election

Brazil is the world’s sixth largest greenhouse gas emitter and home to 60% of the Amazon basin. Since 2018, deforestation levels in the Amazon have been increasing, with just over 13,000km lost last year. Lula’s recent election will hopefully be a turning point for preservation in the Amazon given his climate positive policies. During his last term, we saw the largest decline in Amazon deforestation ever. Governmental support for carbon removal efforts are vital in achieving giga-ton levels.

Ocean based carbon removal on the rise

Two separate reports have been released this month on the role ocean CDR can play in climate change. Ocean Visions’ framework focuses on the cultivation of macroalgae and sequestration, exploring the efficacy, risks and potential co-benefits, providing a foundation for further research into seaweed as a CDR method. The second report was released by OceanNETs and CDRmare, exploring how the ocean can help achieve climate neutrality.

Giving CDR projects their flowers 💐

The budding carbon removal industry is attracting many incredible, bright, and dedicated people. This is a section to highlight a project/person/achievement that deserves praise for helping humanity reach multi-gigatonne scale removals.

So far, the majority of capital for CDR technologies has come from major tech giants, with initiatives such as Frontier (a $925m commitment to purchase CDR credits) stealing the headlines. However these multi-million dollar deals are inaccessible to climate enthusiasts. There is untapped potential demand from individuals to impact the sector, but it is difficult to purchase meaningful and verified credits at an affordable price.

This is where Terraset comes in, a non-profit climate fund that pools together philanthropic contributions to remove carbon from our planet. These donations are tax deductible and directly remove GHG from the atmosphere. Their current portfolio includes Charm and Heirloom, but will be expanding in the near future. What makes Terraset so interesting is that individuals can contribute any amount as a one-off or monthly subscription, massively reducing barriers to entry for everyday people. Terraset will also be accepting donations from foundations, family offices and donor-advised funds. Read more about Terraset’s project on their website or Twitter page.
